Background on Metrics, Crops, and Analysis
The following table contains a brief description of how metrics are computed and their interpretation.
Metric | Model or Tool | Unit | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
Biodiversity | Habitat Potential Index (HPI) | Index | Assessed using the Habitat Potential Index (HPI). HPI scores the potential for a farm field to provide wildlife habitat. HPI scores range from 0-100% and measure the level of opportunity to improve or maximize habitat potential. Higher scores are desirable and indicate a greater potential to support wildlife habitat. |
Energy Use | Fieldprint Algorithm | MJ / kg crop | Estimates the cumulative energy demand associated with producing a crop, using a cradle-to-processing-gate system boundary. This includes the energy use impact of upstream, on-farm, and some post-harvest activities. |
GHG Emissions | Fieldprint Algorithm | kg CO2e / kg crop | Estimates the GHG emissions associated with producing a crop, using a cradle-to-processing-gate system boundary. This includes the GHG emissions associated with upstream, on-farm sources and sinks, and some post-harvest activities. |
Irrigation Water Use | Fieldprint Algorithm | m3 water / kg crop increase | Calculates the amount of water used to achieve an increase in crop yield compared to non-irrigated conditions. |
Land Use | Fieldprint Algorithm | ha / kg | Evaluates productivity by accounting for how much land is used to produce a unit of crop output. |
Soil Carbon | SWAT+ | kg CO2e / ha / year | Models whether a field's soils are losing, maintaining, or sequestering soil organic carbon using SWAT+, a process-based model. |
Soil Conservation | USDA National Erosion Tools (Wind and Water Erosion Models) | Mg / ha / year | Estimates annual soil losses due to water and wind erosion using two process-based models. |
Water Quality | USDA Stewardship Tool for Environmental Performance (STEP) | Index | Estimates the mitigation of nutrient losses from leaching and runoff. |
The following table shows the units used for each crop.

Cotton | kg |
Peanuts | kg |
Corn (grain) | kg |
Dry Beans | kg |
Soybeans | kg |
To assess the overall project performance per year, data from each field is averaged using several ways of weighing differences between field area or production levels.
Weighted averages are more representative than simple averages when the data are not homogeneous or when there is a need to balance the information by its relative importance.
For example, suppose project X has only two fields with different sizes, level of production, and GHG emissions as follows:
- Field A: 5 hectares, emits 20 tons of CO2 per hectare, and produces 12 tons/ha of Corn.
- Field B: 100 hectares, which emits 5 tons of CO2 per hectare, and produces 6 tons/ha of Corn.
A naive approximation would be an unweighted average:
\[ \text{Unweighted average} = \dfrac{20+5}{2} = 12.5 \]
Then, the average emissions from Project X would be 12.5 tons of CO2 per hectare.
A more accurate approximation would be to use production or area as weights to compute a weighted average:
\[ \text{Area adjusted average} = \dfrac{(20 \times 5) + (5 \times 100)}{5 + 100} = 5.71 \]
As a result, the weighted average GHG emissions from Project X would drop to 5.71 tons of CO2 per hectare as it gives more importance to Field B given its larger area.
The case would be the same for using production as weight as total production from each field would be 60 and 600 tons, respectively.
The following table summarizes the weighting average procedure used to compute each metric.

The following plots called boxplots, or box-and-whisker plots, are a graphical representation of variable distributions useful for assessing, central tendency, variability, and spotting potential outliers.
The rectangular box that spans from the first quartile (Q1) to the third quartile (Q3), highlighting the interquartile range (IQR), which is a measure of the spread in the central portion of the distribution.
The line inside the box indicates the median (Q2) and the blue dot the mean. Whiskers extend from Q1 and Q3 to the closest data points within the inner fences, which are defined as Q1 - 1.5IQR and Q3 + 1.5IQR.
Any data points beyond these whiskers are considered outliers. Mild outliers if the fall between 1.5 to 3 times the IQR, or extreme outliers if they fall beyond 3 times the IQR.
Those records away from the 1st and the 3rd quartile by more than 1.5 and 4 times the interquartile range (IQR), i.e., the distance between 1st and 3rd quartile, were deemed as mild and extreme outliers, respectively.

Soil Organic Carbon Fluxes
This graph illustrates the annual variation and long-term trends in Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) fluxes for the indicated crop from 2008 to the most recent year available.
The individual grey lines represent individual fields, typically showing high year-to-year volatility, while the solid blue line tracks the average flux across all fields. A positive value (above zero) on the y-axis indicates GHG emissions (loss of soil organic carbon), whereas negative values indicate that the soil is sequestering carbon.
Key Considerations:
Cyclical Volatility: The annual zigzag pattern reflects how carbon flux is highly sensitive to localized soil conditions, seasonal weather patterns, varying crop yields, and management practices like tillage.
Focus on Long-term Trend: Despite the annual fluctuations from individual fields, the average (blue line) will tend to oscillate around the zero-equilibrium point, suggesting that while some years sequester carbon, others release it, emphasizing the challenges of developing projects that consistently maintain or increase long-term carbon sinks in U.S. crop production systems.
